The Spirit of Motown, Soul, and R&B is a concert program about the music and artists that made the Motown sound great – a blend of storytelling and jazz performance.

This program is the follow-up to “Kind of Blue: A Tribute to Miles Davis,” the concert presentation where Jose Sandoval was honored with the title of Road Scholar Speaker by the Illinois Humanities Council Road Scholars Speakers Bureau.

In the early 60s, Detroit was Motown U.S.A., the automobile capital of the world. In 1959, Motown records founder, Berry Gordy, gathered the best musicians from Detroit’s thriving jazz and blues scene to form his studio band, the Funk Brothers. Together, they created a sound that would bridge the racial divide and produce more number one hits than the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones, Elvis, and The Beatles combined.

Jose Sandoval presents a concert and discussion celebrating spirit of Motown and its influence on Soul, R&B, and rock. Featured songs include “My Girl,” “Heard It through the Grapevine,” and “Just My Imagination.”
